PLAY

Recreation and play are essential components of childhood development and wellbeing, and powerful tools in the relief of distress.

Social, economic and cultural pressures direct many Indian children away from participating in both structured and self-directed recreation opportunities. Many schools and communities lack dedicated clean outdoor areas suitable for both children and adults to play, exercise and be in an outdoor setting for enjoyment, sport and positive health. Additionally, finding trained teachers or professionals in the area of sport and recreation is a significant challenge, especially in regional areas.

The primary mission of our PLAY program is to provide sustainable hands-on recreation engagements that support positive health and education outcomes but that also provide intrinsic joy and an immediate sense of accomplishment for children of all physical abilities and backgrounds. Our current work in this area includes the delivery of special structured events and activities through partner schools, such as sports carnivals designed with games, sport, physical activities and to promote wellness. This includes the introduction of an annual sports carnival for school-aged children in Khajuraho and delivering games and physical skills workshops at Wonderkids English Medium School in Khajuraho. Additionally, with our support, Wonderkids’ English Medium School has moved to a new school campus with its own school ground that provides a dedicated and safe space for children to play on each day.

Our long term ambition is to see sport and recreation adopted within the education context of our Indian projects and partners. We are currently working to secure resources and staff for this.
